Once you have a group together ideally ranging from 3-6* players, you can setup
your first pregame session known as Session Zero (the addition or subtraction of
players is an option, with adjusted rule allotments for minimal party difficulties and
manageability for larger groups . This session entails players creating a character
using books and material approved by the DM. This foundational meeting is
probably the most important session of D&D , because it will determine how the
players proceed.
During this preemptive gathering, the players should discuss with each other what characters they would like to play as during the game, generally broken down into sessions, adventures, arcs, and campaigns. Finally the players should express their wants/expectations of the game beforehand so that the Dungeon Master can be aware and accommodate accordingly if able. (This is were a backstory can come into play for each player, and these threads/ideas can be elaborated upon during the game's progression and expressed by narrative means.)
